Glasgow 1999

A project of 10 installation works temporarily cited in ‘significantly overlooked’ spaces in Glasgow. Journeymen presented an alternative picture of the city during Glasgow’s reign as UK city of Architecture and Design in 1999.

Ceremonial for Springburn Public Halls, May 1999. Staged over a 14 hour period; 2000 memorial candles were placed on the facade by fire engines over the façade, whilst ‘Bill Young Big Band’ played 1940’s dancehall tunes.

The Great Exhibition July 1999 Today not a single pane of glass remains intact in Springburn Winter Gardens, the foreign species have died away and the building is now home to a collection of wasteland plants.

Road to Nowhere 1999 A partially completed motorway bridge built in the 1960’s as a gesture of confidence in future road-building in the city.

Kirkhaven October 1999 The Sydney St Church was converted into a hostel for homeless men in the 1980’s. A devastating fire in 1994 left the building abandoned. The upper tier of the church (pictured) which was relatively undamaged.
