Project shortlisted for Scottish Urban Regeneration Forum awards 2012 (Creativity).
In March 2011 I was commissioned by Glasgow Housing Association as artist-in-residence to Govan Riverside Housing Estate. This was to be the beginning of an amazing journey that continually opened new paths into issues of identity, democracy and power. There are three entries on this site devoted to Govan Riverside: Actions, Markers and Nothing About Us Without Us Is For Us.
There are 4 sets of sculptural work: Assembly (a 3-part work), Waymarkers (a trail made by 7 markers), Honeycombs (a 5 –part work by ts Beall) and 3 signs at the perimeter of the estate.
Assembly. The three parts of Assembly mark the extent of the area that is likely to contain the site of Doomster Hill.View of one part of Assembly with the Riverside Museum in the background.Govan was home to the earthwork Parliament – Doomster Hill. Clockwise from bottom left: Govan in 1000AD – (Doomster Hill = No 4), Govan in 1753, Govan Old churchyard 1895, former play-areas with shipyard cobbles. badge given to people on the Govan Raid (see Govan Actions) It continued to be used through the project and was formed in cast iron as the top piece of the steel construction of Assembly. Each Waymarker consists of a wedge shaped granite slab with a length of steel chain attached. The wedges echoing the ‘dagger’ wedges used in shipbuilding. Detail of a WaymarkerThere are seven unique designs on the Waymarker, overlaying different eras of historical information e.g. a shipyard blueprint is re-labelled with slogans taken from 1971 UCS protest bannersThe Waymarkers project proposed 7 granite slabs that formed a trail from the ferry pontoon through Riverside Housing and back onto Clydebrae Street.Honeycombs is by Govan-based artist ts Beall with Galgael trust. It is constructed from trees felled during landscaping work at Govan Riverside. Waymarkers were made from granite kerbs which were removed during construction of Riversdie Museum.
