Ancestors brings together a number of research areas:

  • genealogy
  • common mythological roots
  • psychology and a practical exploration of materials and construction
Ancestors 001, Dumfries & Galloway.
Study: Prover 2004 Construction developed around a psychological archetype and an ancestor figure.
Ancestors 002, Dumfries & Galloway.
Study: Root 2005. As the project developed, elements of narrative and didactic symbolism were stripped away and the focus shifted to simple material qualities.
Ancestors 003, Dumfries & Galloway.
Study: Great Grandparents 2004 An early direction was the identification of the artist’s 8 great grandparents as the ‘Ancestor Generation’.
Ancestors 004, Dumfries & Galloway.
Study: Mask 2004 Developed from drawings of the ‘Ancestor Generation’ (see 003), Mask is carved in slate and dusted in fine powder.
